Disfigured Women Begs For The Right To Die

A French woman badly disfigured by facial tumours caused by a rare and incurable disease has appealed to President Nicolas Sarkozy to allow her to die by euthanasia.

In an interview with the Agence France-Presse news agency, former school teacher Chantal Sebire, 52, begged for the right to end the "atrocious" suffering inflicted on her by the disease which has rendered her face unrecognisable because of growing tumours.

"An animal would not be allowed to endure what I have to endure," she said from her home in Plombieres-les-Dijon in central France, asking French media and Mr Sarkozy to allow her a dignified death.

Immortality Is One Gene Closer

A genetically engineered organism that lives 10 times longer than normal has been created by scientists in California. It is the greatest extension of longevity yet achieved by researchers investigating the scientific nature of ageing.

If this work could ever be translated into humans, it would mean that we might one day see people living for 800 years. But is this ever going to be a realistic possibility?

Valter Longo is one of the small but influential group of specialists in this area who believes that an 800-year life isn't just possible, it is inevitable. It was his work at the University of Southern California that led to the creation of a strain of yeast fungus that can live for 10 weeks or more, instead of dying at its usual maximum age of just one week.

By deleting two genes within the yeast's genome and putting it on a calorie-restricted diet, Longo was able to extend tenfold the lifespan of the same common yeast cells used by bakers and brewers. The study is published later this week in the journal Public Library of Science Genetics.

There is, of course, a huge difference between yeast cells and people, but that hasn't stopped Longo and his colleagues suggesting that the work is directly relevant to human ageing and longevity. "We're setting the foundation for reprogramming healthy life. If we can find out how the longevity mechanism works, it can be applied to every cell in every living organism," Longo says.

Hand Wound Monday: Branding

Found this self-inflicted wound on Danny's page:

Also, right after we finished The leg branding in Philadelphia, i asked Steve to quickly give me a branding on my hand. This branding was in this specific shape to match Jill's hand branding she did when she was like 13 with a cigarette lighter.

Underwater Puking Goats No Longer Needed

goats puking underwater

The Ministry of Defence says it will abandon deep-diving experiments which involve inducing decompression sickness in live goats.

The animals were used to see what the likely risk of "the bends" would be following escape from a submarine at varying depths under water.

The information would help crews judge whether it would be safer to abandon a stricken vessel or wait to be rescued.

Animal rights campaigners say the move will "end decades of animal suffering".

More than 400 such experiments have taken place since 2000.

Hand Wound Monday: Dog Bite

Found at Gordon Will's photostream:

I was delivering flyers advertising Grizelda's veterinary visiting service 21st April. I pushed the postcard sized card through the letter box and a dog bit my finger. There was no sound at all from behind the door until I was bitten. There was a lot of sound from both sides of the door after the bite. Grizelda has used some "wonder" wound covering on the chewed finger and it is repairing really fast. It is like sticky cling film and is called "Tegaderm" made by 3M Health care. The picture on the right was taken on 7th. May. The shiny look is because it is covered in "tegaderm".

Funny Story...

All I really wanted to do when I was 12-years-old was to become a veterinarian, until I started working for one after school. This blog is a nice reminder of why I never went into veterinary medicine, probably not something a 12-year-old should be experiencing. Anyways...
