Another case of the week:

Two gentlemen in their forties sustained dorsal tangential rotating saw blade injuries of their distal interphalangeal joints, fortunately not on the same night.

Injury of the small finger, with loss of skin, terminal tendon insertion, and dorsal cortex of both sides of the joint. This shows the injury after debridement:

A bit worse injury, involving the index and middle fingers of this insulin dependent diabetic. The index finger extensor tendon is simply divided, but the middle finger extensor tendon is absent from the mid-middle phalanx to its insertion - what is visible in this picture is periosteum. Additionally, both fingers have shredded and partially absent nail matrices.

The teachers of the Faculty of Manga at Japan's Kyoto Seika University have created a manga pamphlet to appeal for information on the unsolved stabbing death of one of their students. 20-year-old Daisaku Chiba was a freshman in the department when he was found stabbed in the central Japanese city of Kyoto on the evening of January 15. He reportedly said, "I have no idea who stabbed me," before dying of his ten stab wounds at the hospital. The faculty's instructors and students plan to distribute 1,000 copies of the 20-page pamphlet at the main Japan Railways station in Kyoto and other locations during the middle of December.

In addition to describing the known characteristics of the suspected male killer, the pamphlet devotes half of its pages to depicting Chiba's life. It includes stories, recounted by friends, of how he studied diligently to become a manga artist in his northern hometown of Sendai. Kyoto Seika University is famed for creating Japan's first university manga program and faculty of manga. An unnamed 46-year-old male instructor in the manga faculty told the Nikkei news firm, "Chiba-kun met us through manga. Wouldn't it give us some comfort if we could help arrest the killer with the power of manga?"

Dai Kehong was just 24 years old when both his hands were crushed—leaving him maimed for life—while working a punch press molding machine at the Kaisi factory at 9:00 p.m., 13 hours into his shift the night of March 10, 2005. Dai Kehong was producing furniture side drawer rails for export to U.S. companies when he was injured.

Zhu Zhenghong and his wife, like millions of other rural migrant workers from across China, left Sichuan Province traveling hundreds of miles south to look for factory work in Guangzhou. Zhu’s wife found work in an electronics factory in the Panyu District. Zhu started working at the Kaisi factory on June 20, 2006. When he signed on he was told he would be working in the welding department. However, with no safety training at all, Zhu was put to work stamping name plates. After two months he was moved and put to work operating a stamp molding machine. Then on September 9, 2006, at 11:00 a.m.—just a little over two and a half months after he started working at the Kaisi factory—Zhu Zhenghong’s right hand was crushed in the mold. Zhu lost two fingers nearly down to the knuckle and the top of a third finger.

Lei Shengke’s right hand was severely crushed in a machine accident on September 27, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., in workshop #2 at the Kaisi Metals factory. Other than his thumbs, all four fingers on his right hand were smashed. The first and middle fingers on the right hand were destroyed and severed. Both joints of the small finger were crushed, and the ring finger was also damaged.

After playing World of Warcraft, the 12 year old boy knew how to cope when he was attacked by a moose in the forest.

In the article he describes how he first yelled at the moose, distracting it so his sister got away, then when he got attacked and the animal stood over him he feigned death. "Just like you learn at level 30 in World of Warcraft."
