Hand Wound Monday: Lizard Bite

Stumbled across this nasty crocodile monitor bite from ProExotics faq:

lizard bite

Here is the second bite with it's story:

The Croc monitor poses, in my opinion, more cause for concern (when compared to other easily obtained monitors) due to their behavior. We experienced this first hand at my facility. Two years ago, one of my animal keepers was giving our croc monitor (a YOUNG male at only 7') it's daily warm shower. He took his eyes off the lizard for a split moment and the croc must have seen some fingers moving around on the spray nozzle. He came over and just nipped and let go in a millisecond. I heard a blood curdling scream and ran over only to see blood splattered on the glass, the floor, everywhere. This little nip just about severed off one of the fingers of my staff. He went through 4 hours of intensive surgery and has a very nice scar to this day and has never regained fully feeling and mobility in that finger. Just something to think about before making a mistake.

Flaming Squirrel Ignites Car

A kamikaze squirrel fell from the sky and detonated a Bayonne woman's car yesterday, police said today.

Lindsey Millar, 23, and her brother, Tony, 22, were both home Wednesday at about 12:45 p.m. when Lindsey's car suddenly started burning outside their 42nd Street home.

Tony Millar said firefighters told them it was the work of a buck-toothed saboteur that had been gnawing on overhead power lines connected to a transformer directly above the 2006 Toyota Camry.

"The squirrel chewed through the wire, was set on fire, fell down directly to where the car was," Tony Millar said. "The squirrel, on fire, slid into the engine compartment and blew up the car.

"They're always coming around here, chewing through the garbage," he added.

Tony Millar says his sister was fully insured.

"It's something to laugh about once she has a new car," he said. "It's not funny yet."

Police said there were no injuries -- except for the squirrel, that is, which is dead.

Hand Wound Monday: Floppy Tips

From the Case of the Week:

"I just can't hold anything with this finger - it's too mushy...".

That's the reason he is here, explains your patient. He had a saw injury of his dominant hand index dorsal fingertip about two years ago, and was told that he was lucky that he didn't lose his finger. It took months to heal. The tip is is neither very painful nor tender. Nonetheless, he has been troubled by the fact that his fingertip is "wobbly" or soft", which interferes with two point pinch and fine manipulation. He is bothered to a lesser degree by the fact that it is shorter than the opposite hand index finger. The finger looks like this:

Follow Up: This patient's problem was treated with bone grafting using a novel approach. Immediately before grafting, the phalanx was restored to pre injury length by a period of distraction lengthening.

Polar Bear Playing With Husky

polar bear husky

Hunter-trapper Brian LaDoon was taking care of his pack of Husky dogs on a Canadian tundra and German photographer Norbert Rosing was setting up his cameras, when out of nowhere a large polar bear walked up to one of the dogs.

Brian knew that the bear had not eaten for months, and thought it was "curtains" for the dog when something completely unexpected happened: the polar bear and the dog started playing with each other!

Mizuno Junko Interview

mizuno junko

XG: Regarding the art, there’s a very sensual and sexy aspect to it — something that is rather rare in the non-pornographic manga production. In this case to, it’s something that appeals to you?

MJ: At home with my parents, we weren’t very open regarding those things. So yes, I think sexy things do appeal to me.

XG: It’s very present in your manga.

MJ: Especially since I like to draw nudes. But I think there are a lot of women who drawn pin-ups, when we discuss together and wonder why, the answer is nearly always “because we like it”. Myself, I don’t really know.
Among men who drawn male nudes, there are a lot of gay men. But for women, without necessarily being gay, there are a lot of women who like drawing sexy women, pin-ups. Why, I don’t know. But with fashion, make-up, hairdressing, there are a lot of possible reasons...

XG: Nudity is very present in your books, and moreover, very openly sexual poses.

MJ: (laughs) Yes, but I like that. I’ve always liked the pin-ups in Playboy. [Note: during the very relaxed chat that followed this interview, I mentionned the sado-masochistic set-ups that are prominently featured in Pure Trance, and Mizuno Junko mentioned without hesitation the works of Eric Stanton as an influence and a source for inspiration.]

XG: We were discussing the position of women in the Japanese society, wouldn’t the pin-ups from Playboy a way to break away from it? By displaying their sexuality, their strength?

MJ: There are different ways to understand “strength”. There are women who feign listening to what men are telling them, but are in fact completely in control. And those women do display strength, in my opinion.
But for the girls who pose nude to bring money home, and there are a lot of them... they have a lot of pride. Models... for me, it’s a carrier that is completely closed to me, of course, but I think it’s great, that they are beautiful.
Japanese magazine ofen show women in submissive situations, ashamed of being nude — I hate that with a passion. While in Playboy...

XG: Women are more in control of the situation? Compared to Japan, where they show more timidity ...

MJ: True, but there is a lot of women who fake timidity, because men like it. Which makes it all the more difficult to know which women are displaying strength.

Hand Wound Monday: Meat Grinder

Fiend reader, LJ, pointed me to this insane rotten post regarding a meat grinder accident:

"In arrangement with the paramedics present, the onduty fire brigade removed the meat grinder from the arm with an angle sander (while cooling with distilled water). There was no other way to remove it. You can clearly recognize the further injuries that resulted from this method in the final picture."

Angler Wants His Friends To Use His Dead Body To Catch Fish

fishbait

Terminally-ill Pete Hodge, 61, has arranged for his remains to be made into bait so his riverbank mates can enjoy a bumper catch.

Pete, who has motor neurone disease, is a national champ and winner of hundreds of competitions.

His ashes will be “balled in” as groundbait mix by pals at the Huntspill River near Bridgewater, Somerset.

He said: “It may sound strange but this is my dream. To be back in the river catching fish is where I belong.

“I hope my friends make me proud with their catches.”

Pete has already had a coffin made — fashioned as a giant wicker fishing basket.

Exercise Challenge: Walk to Rivendell

walk to rivendell

Walk, run, hike, bike, blade, swim - if you can measure the distance, you can do this challenge. Keep a log, and record your daily or weekly miles and the type of exercise. For walkers and hikers, you might want to invest in a walking meter, they look like wristwatches. Otherwise, you can estimate your distance at 1 mile for every 20 minutes of brisk walking on a flat surface. Our original suggested deadline was the opening of The Return of the King, December 17, 2003. As this glorious day is now past, we are setting new goals, new times:

If you would like to set a long term distance goal, choose any one of the following...

1625 miles: Take the road home with the hobbits from Minas Tirith to Hobbiton.

* 535 miles from Minas Tirith to Isengard
* 693 miles from Isengard to Rivendell.
* 397 miles from Rivendell to Bag End.

The Devil's Bible

devil's bible

Codex Gigas, also known as the Devil's Bible — a medieval manuscript said to have been written 800 years ago with the devil's help — has returned to Prague after an absence of 359 years.

According to myth, a Benedictine monk promised to write the book overnight to atone for his sins. When he realized the task was impossible, he asked the devil for help. The page with the illustration of the devil the one visitors see.

The manuscript was likely written by one monk from the Benedictine monastery in Podlazice located some 100 kilometers (65 miles) east of Prague sometime at the beginning of the 13th century, said Zdenek Uhlir, a specialist on medieval manuscripts at the National Library.

Hand Wound Monday: Cricketer's Broken Fingers

Spotted a couple of weeks ago at Arboath:

David Morrison is anything but a safe pair of hands.

In 45 years of wicket keeping, the amateur league cricketer has broken every finger and both his thumbs.

Reluctant to seek medical attention for fear of losing his place in the team, he would simply apply a bag of frozen peas and carry on playing.
